For Mother's Day, my husband Karl bought me 2nd row center tickets to see John Prine at the Shubert Theater in New Haven last night.I promised my sister Bonnie that I would post about the concert ASAP, but midnight is past my bedtime so I just rolled into bed when we got home last night.
The concert was, of course, fabulous. The amazing seats didn't hurt. Prine came out from behind the mic several times, playing at the edge of the stage and if I hadn't minded falling over the person in the front row, I could have touched him!
The warm up act was Jason Wilber, who is also Prine's guitarist. And man could he play guitar! His singing and songwriting wasn't bad either, not Prine, but good enough that I bought his CD. Wilber tells the story that Prine happened into a coffeehouse where he was playing and was so impressed with his music that he didn't call him for ten years. But, 10 years later, Wilber does get a call from Prine who asks if Wilber would like to tour with him. He said he was heating up his Ramen soup for dinner when got the call, and had to decide, Ramen soup - tour with John Prine? He turned off the ramen soup.
Prine did many of his standards -- Angel from Montgomery, Sam Stone, Donald and Lydia, and others from his first album, opening with Level Headed Baby. He also did many I hadn't heard and they were just as good!
So go visit Prine's official site and hear some music. You can also hear more on his MySpace page. Me, I had to get back up early this morning to get to karate class. Yaaawwwwwnnnnn....
